Best High Altitude & Elevation Training Mask Reviews - Simulate Low Oxygen Workout & Running Conditions

Competition among athletes has grown now more than ever, and to improve and stay on top of your game, it's only normal that you strive to push yourself to the limit.

Training masks are one of the approved ways you can push your body to perform better than normal.

Essentially, training masks reduce airflow during workouts to imitate training at higher altitudes. Folks who train on a mountain or hill, for instance, are looking to improve their cardiovascular strength and endurance with the tough weather condition in this environment.

The increased elevation means reduced oxygen and pressure during training, which make your body perform better when you are back at lower altitudes for a limited period.

Although they are still relatively new, training masks are widely used by fitness freaks and athletes all over the world and not just for sports.

In simple terms, training masks are basically for folks who want to take their physical fitness to another level. Not to forget that it helps travelling athletes with altitude acclimatization.

Professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts know that they can’t just purchase the first training mask they see online. In other words, there is a lot more than meets the eye if you want the best training mask that suits your workout routine and most importantly, your budget.

In this light, I have compiled a detailed list of the best training masks to get in the market, and a brief guide at the end of this review to help you make an informed purchase.

The 10 Best Training Mask Review

1. Training Mask 3.0

Training Mask 3.0 [EVA Case Included] Workout Elevation Performance Fitness Mask for Running and Breathing Mask, Cardio Mask, Official Training Mask Used by Pros (All Black + Case, Medium)

Our Verdict: Best Overall

Training Mask is a reputable brand that has been a pacesetter for other companies in this industry.

Powered by a revolutionary airflow platform, the Training Mask 3.0 is the latest release by the Training Mask line of performance training products. It is a follow up to the Training Mask 2.0, recognized in most high altitude mask reviews as one of the best in the market.

Training Mask 3.0 has a premium pricing that is justified by its cutting edge design, hence making it the best overall in this review.

The Training Mask 3.0 has a completely different and better design than its predecessor. In a training mask 3.0 review, its style was called the “Sub-Zero.”

This is a cooler style because you don’t have the resistance caps out in front like the 2.0. Also, it doubles as a very effective design, as it’s now easier to change the resistance levels.

Unlike what you’ll see in many other fitness masks, it uses an easy-to-control wheel to dial up the intensity from beginner to freak level. It comes with three (3) flux valves and six (6) resistance caps that it uses for regulating airflow for.

Compared to the 2.0 version, its sleeve is sleek and stays comfortable all through a workout session.

To give a good fit, the Training Mask 3.0 has an adjustable head strap and is also available in three different sizes – Small, Medium, and Large.

In summary, this is the best altitude training mask for anyone who is serious about getting intensified workouts and can afford it.

Pros:

  • Great aesthetics
  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • Comes with a free carry case
  • Three-year warranty
  • Comfortable
  • Adjustable Velcro strap
  • Easy to use

Cons:

  • The outer sleeve is not the most durable
  • Expensive

2. FITGAME Workout Mask

FITGAME Workout Mask | 24 Breathing Resistance Levels - Fitness Mask | Training in High Altitude Simulation - Increase Cardio Endurance | Bonus Sport Bracelet and Box Included (Black)

Our Verdict: Economical Choice

FitGame Workout Mask is a top-rated high altitude mask for folks that are training on a tight budget.

For a product this cheap, it offers a great value that takes your workout to the next level with almost no traces of poor quality.

First off, it features 24 resistance levels that allow you easily customize your workout intensity. With this feature, it is easy for beginners and professionals alike to take advantage of this inexpensive training mask.

Also, for a training mask within its price range, the quality of its build is top-notch. From the first touch and feel, you will know its made with good materials and stitching all-around. That said, you won’t face any early rip-off, tear or breakages.

The design of the FitGame high altitude mask is comfortable and ergonomic. Its lightweight frame contours easily to your face, and has its easy-to-use controls positioned ergonomically in the front to regulate airflow.

On another hand, the mask’s material is breathable and allows you to train for longer periods without discomfort and can also be strapped on easily with its Velcro. It also makes it a good fit for all sizes, sports and sexes (men and women).

For even better overall customer satisfaction, it comes with two extra air filters – all for the same price.

However, very few beginner users have had issues with air blowing up their faces. The simple fix for this is to breathe in through the nose, and out through the mouth.

Also, one customer complained about moisture build-up in the masks, which sounds unsurprising, but might be a thing.

All in all, FitGame mask is the best altitude mask for folks looking to get the best at the lowest price. It helps you get that extra push you need in your workouts in a comfortable and affordable fashion.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Very affordable
  • Easy to use
    Has 24 levels Resistance levels
  • Great aesthetics
  • Comes with two (2)e extra filters and a rubber hand band

Cons:

  • Moisture build-up inside the mask

3. Training Mask 2.0

TRAININGMASK Training Mask [Black Out - Large] 2.0 Originals Series - Elevation Workout Mask, Cardio and Endurance Mask, Fitness Mask, Breathing Resistance Mask, Running Mask

Our Verdict: Best Alternative

As you might already be wondering, the Training Mask 2.0 is the older version of the Training Mask 3.0 that I’ve mentioned earlier in this review.

Even though the Training Mask 2.0 may now seem old-fashioned, it's still good enough to make running mask reviews as a cheaper alternative to the 3.0 version.

The 2.0 edition does the basics: pushes you beyond your limits by adding various resistance levels to your respiratory muscles. The only thing you’ll be missing out on is the new look and free mask case you’ll get with the 3.0.

The resistance levels can be dialed up to your tune with the three (3) flux valves that are installed right in front of the mask. Some folks might not like the look of the valves uncovered. If that’s the case, the 3.0 has a cover for the valves, and they are also easier to control.

If you want to pick a size that fits perfectly, ignore choosing based on bodyweight. Try to measure your head circumference to the tip of your nose to get your actual size. The sizes range within small, medium, and large, so can find where your measurements fall into.

The main features that help control your oxygen intake to “simulate” training at altitude are largely the same as in the 3.0. It has six (6) resistance levels that allow you to focus on breathing and helps your overall cardio strength.

Although the Training Mask 2.0 has a lightweight and comfortable design with the help of its neoprene sleeve, it is not as comfortable as the 3.0 version. This is as a result of the thicker texture of the material in the 2.0.

All things being considered, it’s an impressive resistance training mask for anyone looking to add a new dimension to their workout routines for a lower price.

Pros:

  • Comfortable neoprene sleeve
  • Trusted brand (Pioneer training mask brand)
  • Impressive features like Re-Breather and Flux-Valve
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Not as comfortable as the newer version

4. Sparthos Workout Mask

Sparthos Training Mask High Altitude Mask - for Gym Workouts, Running, Cycling, Elevation, Cardio - Fitness Training Mask - Hypoxic Resistance o2 2 3 - Lung Breathing Exercise [+Case]

Our Verdict: Best Aesthetics

Sparthos is a fitness brand that sells workout enhancing accessories like kinesiology tapes, back braces, compression sleeves, and of course, workout masks.

Their workout mask is one of the most, if not the most popular training mask online with over half a thousand (500+) sold.

For a product that’s so popular, you’ll expect it to have a great selling point, and that you’ll get. Besides its impressive design and features, you can now get it for a fraction of its actual price that used to be only affordable to elite athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

The Sparthos training mask also has amazing aesthetics. It is not only available in the regular back color, but also comes in attractive military camo and red camo designs.

The main feature is its impressive sixteen (16) levels of airflow. With this amount of breathing levels at your disposal, you can be sure you’ll get the level that meets your fitness, whether beginner, pro, or freak.

To set your breathing limit, it uses two valves that are covered with a breathable mesh plastic. You only have to flip the outer part of the valves up and down to control your breathing level without having to take the mask off during workouts.

Even better, you get to control not only inhalation but also how you exhale. This is a feature you will hardly find in other brands.

On the other hand, the design of its straps is non-slip, which makes sense since the masks will be used mostly for high-intensity workouts. Also, it works hand-in-hand with its one-size-fits-all design to keep the masks on during workouts.

Although the overall design of the Sparthos seems perfect, some users don’t like its large profile. It can be a pain in the neck if you wear sunglasses or want to do pull-ups.

Overall, the Sparthos altitude mask is a no-brainer if you want to make your workouts more challenging. It also comes with a free case to carry the mask around.

Pros:

  • Great design
  • Sixteen (16) resistance levels
  • Available in three (3) different colors (Black, military camo, red camo)
  • Snug Fit
  • Restricts both inhaling and exhaling for more intensity
  • Available on 43% discount

Cons:

  • Breaks easily

5. Vikingstrength Training Workout Mask

Vikingstrength New 24 Levels Training Workout Mask for Running Biking MMA Endurance with Adjustable Resistance, High Altitude Elevation Mask for Air Resistance Training (Improved Design)

Our Verdict: Best in Comfort

VikingStrength is a fitness brand that’s committed to taking your training to the next level with a ton of training enhancement equipment. From their high altitude mask, neck trainers, occlusion bands, to arm blasters, you will know they are out to make you better with their products.

Their workout mask is also built to add that extra challenge you need to your workout with 24 breathing levels. This makes it an obvious choice for beginners with low resistance level and off-the-chart breathing levels for the pros. In plain terms, you get resistance levels between 2000-18,000 ft.

As you’d expect of a good workout mask, it is lightweight and comfortable. It is designed with ease-of-use in mind. First, its stretchy nylon material doubles as a breathable fabric and makes its “one-size-fits-most” design work. Also, its Velcro strap further makes it easy to adjust to give you a snug fit.

The breathing mask is made of medical-grade silicone plastic and doesn’t give off fumes that may hurt folks with allergies.

Another smart feature for comfort asides being able to switch through resistance levels without taking the mask off is how easy it is to assemble/disassemble. This makes it very easy to clean.

The VikingStrength also comes with a free bag to conveniently carry the mask around. And this is very generous for an altitude mask in its price range.

Last but not least, it comes in three different styles you can choose from, including camo variations. But they don’t look as cool as that of the Sparthos training mask.

Overall, this is another affordable option if you want to add extra difficulty to your workouts.

Pros:

  • Stretchy sleeves
  • Affordable
  • Strong Velcro straps
  • 24 resistance levels for beginners and pros
  • Easy to clean/wash
  • Free carry bag
  • Available in three (3) colors (black, green camo, and white digital camo)

Cons:

  • The resistance control lever is flimsy

6. Phantom Athletics Training Mask

Phantom Athletics Black Workout Training Mask for Endurance Sports, High Altitude Elevation Effects, Strengthen Lungs and Breathing Muscles with 4 Levels of Resistance, Size: M

Our Verdict: Best in Breathing Options

Phantom Athletics is typically a fitness clothing line with their training mask as their only equipment. The mask is suitable for most sports and workouts, form cycling, running, to martial arts training.

The Phantom Athletics Training Mask is built to last for years, which isn’t surprising for a premium product. The regulator (Phantom Regulator System) and its cover are made of long-lasting nylon while the mask body, made from medical-grade silicone, is well thought of for hygiene and hypoallergenic conditions.

The sleeve is ultralight, weighing on 3.4oz, and gets even more impressive with sweat-wicking, and non-slip features.

The mask uses a hook and loop closure to give you an easily adjustable fit that is comfortable and won’t come off in training.

As with most training masks, sizing is relative to your weight category, which isn’t always accurate. A small or lightweight person, for instance, may have a large head, making the inevitably tight on the head. Go up a size if you fall into this is also your case.

For its main feature, there are four (4) resistance levels to control the intensity of breathing during workouts. The problem with this is that you might not find the lowest level challenging enough, and the next level may be too intense.  For a product of this quality and price range, there should be more breathing levels.

In any case, you can easily use the PRS (Phantom Regulation System) to change breathing levels without taking the mask off.

As it’s a premium quality, Phantom Athletics' pricing is relatively expensive but well justified by its awesome features.

Apart from its limited intensity settings, this training mask is a solid option and will make the list of any elevation training mask review.

Pros:

  • Versatile
  • Ultra Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Breathable

Cons:

  • Limited resistance levels and settings
  • Fairly expensive

7. Dimok Workout Mask

dimok Workout Mask Training Breathing Mask for Running Sports High Altitude Elevation Simulation - Endurance Exercise HIIT

Our Verdict: Best for Newbies

The Dimok high altitude simulation mask isn’t the most popular in most workout reviews, but is always included for their simple functionality.

The mask is equipped with sixteen (16) resistance levels to rev up your training as much as you can handle. It makes it suitable for total newbies and fitness fiends alike. Like most training masks, it is not heavy on the face, and its sleeve is breathable and flexible to make it as comfortable as possible.

This simple blend of functional materials allows you to go through your training without feeling uneasy with the mask on.

The Dimok mask has a rather limited range of sizes as it is designed for folks weighing between 155 pounds to 220 pounds. Nevertheless, you can contact Dimok to enquire for a better fit if you don’t fall into the scale.

The mask has two outer levers that allow you to control the breathing level as you wish during your workouts. Plus, it’s easy to assemble/disassemble for cleaning and washing.

Asides the minor complaints about its limited size, Dimok training mask is a solid option if you’re just testing out hypoxic or altitude simulation training.

Pros:

  • 16 resistance levels
Snug fit with adjustable Velcro strap
  • Adjustable resistance mid-workouts

Cons:

  • Incompatible with anyone weighing less than 155 pounds

8. TEC Endurance Training Mask

TEC Training Mask - 16 Breathing Levels, Maximizes Workout and Achieves Benefit of High Altitude Elevation Training for Running, Cycling, Boxing, HIIT; Increases Cardio, Endurance and Stamina

Our Verdict: Best Lightweight

The TEC (The Endurance Club) Training Mask is a top-rated choice in many altitude training mask reviews, and it isn’t hard to see why.

It packs a lot of value for training mask in its price range, especially with its hard shell storage case. The most you’ll get from most brands is a flimsy bag or case.

With that being said, it isn’t just about the extra accessory you’re getting. The mask can simulate altitudes of up to 18,000 ft via oxygen restriction across 16 resistance levels. This allows beginners to also start from the lowest level (4000 ft) and dial up the intensity as they build up their stamina and endurance.

What’s more, the Tec Endurance Training Mask comes with six (6) additional flux valves that are also easy to replace. This, in turn, means that the mask is easy to set-up for use.

Compared to the Dimok Workout Mask, it has better size options with its one-size-fits-most design for individuals between 120lbs to 230lbs.

Finally, its lightweight, non-slip and ultra-silent features are excellent perks that come with this mask.

In an industry with training masks that have barely different features, customer service is what makes TEC standout.

Pros:

  • Ultra-silent
  • Sturdy
  • Non-slip feature
  • Comes with a hard shell carry case
  • Easy to use and assemble
  • Great customer service

Cons:

  • Left flux valve comes uninstalled

9. Cardio King Resistance Training Mask

Elevation Resistance Training Mask [6 Altitude/High Altitude Resistance Workout Levels] for Running, Cardio, High Intensity Training, Cycling Endurance and Stamina (Medium)

Our Verdict: Best for Regular Training

The Cardio King resistance mask is another affordable choice if you want more intensity in your workout.

It has a sleek design with its sleeve covering the mask, which makes it minimalistic compared to other training masks. However, the three resistance caps are in plain sight and give it a somewhat eerie look.

The mask offers six (6) resistance levels and is regulated using the three (3) on the mask. It is obviously easy to control since the flux valves are just outside the mask and within close reach of your hands during workouts.

Also, the head sleeve is made from a high-quality neoprene material to make it comfortable.

However, since the head sleeve rests on the ears, some customers have complained that it doesn’t fit over their ears comfortably. This, in turn, makes a portion of the mask hurt the nose. The good thing is, this is only going to be an issue if it isn’t your size, so be careful.

Plus, you have to buy a head strap separately, if you want to use the mask for high-intensity workouts or contact sports, to prevent them from slipping off.

Despite these complaints, the Cardio King delivers fast, and have a responsive customer service, in case you have any issues or need to exchange for a better-sized mask.

All in all, this is a good mask for regular training, with the only inexcusable issue being that you have to buy a head strap separately to get a non-slip fit for intense training.

Pros:

  • Very Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Easy-to-use controls
  • Good customer service
  • Fast delivery

Cons:

  • Head strap is sold separately

10. VEOXLINE Training Mask

VEOXLINE Training Mask | 24 Breathing Resistance Levels - Sport Workout Running Biking Fitness Jogging Cardio Exercise for Men Women | Imitate Workout at High Altitudes (Black)

Our Verdict: Best Deal

The VEOXLINE Training Mask is normally a mid-range priced product but is now available at a more affordable price.

This training mask is a regular on running masks reviews and has earned a customers choice badge on notable online stores for obvious reasons.

The mask is well-designed for general use in cardio workouts and even contact sports like basketball without falling off. Well, this is because it uses a comfortable neoprene sleeve that’s breathable and an adjustable Velcro strap to keep it from falling off.

Also, the mask itself is durable and safe to use as it is made of medical-grade silicone.

Thanks to this material, very few customers who have a larger head size have complained about the mask curving into their cheeks, yet, make remarks that it isn’t painful.

To add that necessary intensity to your training, it has 16 resistance levels that offer a generous range of altitude difficulty between 2000ft to 18000ft. This makes it usable by a total newbie finding his balance and a workout freak looking for the toughest workout.

It comes with two flux valves and as usual, have an extended lever outside the mask to make it adjustable while you train.

Again, like most training masks, it’s a one-size-fits-most design. So, if you have a large head, you may find it uncomfortable or experience air leaks in the mask at high settings.

The Veoxline training mask is another solid, affordable option for folks who want to try out workout masks and hardcore trainers looking for the best deal.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Non-slip strap
  • 16 Resistance levels
  • Adjustable while training
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Uncomfortable for users with large sized heads

Qualities to Look Out For When Choosing a Good Training Mask

man running with a training mask on

Level of Elevation

This refers to the level of oxygen resistance that you can adjust your training masks to.

Generally, these levels are adjusted through the flux valve levers, with resistance levels commonly in the range of 4 and 8, and some having up to 16 or 24 levels. These levels represent the altitudes that the mask tries to simulate.

The lowest altitude is usually 2000ft above sea-level, medium altitudes that range between 5,000ft-12,000ft, and higher altitudes marked above 12,000ft. The altitudes simply represent the level of air restriction you will get and becomes harder as switch to higher altitudes.

As you may already know, it’s advisable that you go for training masks with a greater number of adjustable levels. Although they are considerably more expensive, they provide you with the flexibility to adapt to higher intensity training at a pace of your own.

Fit & Comfort

Training masks commonly come in sizes that range from small to large. With this in mind, you have to be careful because getting a smaller mask makes your workout uncomfortable and getting one that’s too big will allow air to escape through the sides.

Also, there are training masks with a one-size-fits-most design that makes them adjustable to any head size. This is a highly recommended design, especially if you’re unsure about your sizing.

On another hand, the strap of the workout mask is another indicator of how well the mask can fit. There are two kinds;

  • One-strap
  • Two-strap

Two-strap training masks are more expensive than their counterpart because they ensure a much better fit, and are more comfortable to wear.

Check out this post for how you can properly choose your training mask size.

Material

The best training masks are made from quality, tough materials that are guaranteed to be non-slip and weather-resistant too.

Some of these materials include silicone, neoprene, nylon, Latex, rubber.

Generally, Silicone composed training masks are more expensive. Rubber/Latex composed masks are relatively cheap and thicker/heavier, which is why they generally have more valves than thin masks.

Air Flow

Good airflow is a key function of the filter in the mask, which helps to regulate and filter air intake.

For the most part, these filters are easily removable for cleaning and inspection. Some training masks come with extra filters to change them when necessary.

Also, some other qualities to watch out for when picking a good training mask include durability, pricing and design or style.

And before we end this review, watch this video about how training masks allows for better breathing:

After we've gone through all the best options for your training masks and the qualities you need to look for, for one, we're sure that you're really into a more intense workout. That said, let me guide you through some more reviews to help you improve your strength and endurance...

For high altitude or even just a plain ol' running workout outdoors, one of our top rated weighted vests is a good addition to your resistance level.

Now, in times that you would like to get your game on in your home gym, having a rebounder around comes handy. It's a great way to work your cardio exercises even when wearing your training mask.

The last of my recommendation for your choice of intense workout is an old school jump rope. You'll find the best crossfit jump rope and the benefits of using one in one of our reviews.

Conclusion

With so many training masks with similar features and only different branding, it wasn’t hard for me to pick the Training Mask 3.0 as the standout among them.

Featuring an innovative wheel resistance level control, sleek design, and functional breathing levels, you can easily and comfortably go through your workout without worrying about hard controls or the mask hurting your face.

Also, it’s virtually the only training mask that offers something different in its features (wheel control). It also comes with a free carry case bag.

Once you come to terms with its relatively high price, you can’t go wrong in your quest to intensify your workouts faster.
