Colorectal cancer (CRC) is known to be the third most common cancer in men and the third in women worldwide, according to World Health Organization (WHO).  The level of consumption of red meat and especially processed meat is high in developed countries, which puts them at higher risk of having the cancer.

Why meat might cause colorectal cancer?

Processed meats like sausages and hot dogs can contain different raw materials, including potential protective factors and there is a whole scale of production methods that may pose a large or small risk for CRC. Processed meats have been confirmed to cause CRS, due to the preservatives and flavors added to them. Red meats such has beef,lamb and sometimes pork, hasn’t been associated to cancer.

What is the risk exactly?

The risk of having CRC through meat consumption is low, compared to smoking and alcohol consumption. WHO estimated that the consumption of 50grams of processed meats daily or 100 grams of red meats in a day might increase the risks of having CRC by 18% and 17% respectively. This can only be possible if red meats get confirmed to cause cancer, but the fact hasn’t been established yet.
