Practicing Meditation through Cycling
Who says that mediation requires you to only sit motionless with your legs crossed and hands resting on your knees? By having a portion of your time of the day dedicated to meditation and mindfulness, you can significantly improve your quality of life. You can meditate regardless what activity you’re engaged in – it’s simply a state of mind. You can engage in the state of expanded mindfulness while performing any physical activity. That also means that you can spare some time, while also caring about your body and your mind altogether. For bike lovers, achieving this state of mind can be enlightening. Every pedal push is a chance to forget about worries and enjoy the environment while thinking about your breath, connecting with nature and even experiencing the pain of pushing yourself. Here are some tips on how to meditate while also doing your favorite pastime.
Before setting out, be sure to feel relaxed. Empty your mind, but be aware that the first sensation you feel will be greatly enhanced. So, in order to avoid unpleasant feelings, for example itching or being bothered by uncomfortable clothes, always dress appropriately, and try to stretch beforehand so you can avoid it. Choose something positive to think about as you set out – it’s a great aspect of riding a bicycle. And don’t forget – don’t push yourself too hard. You can’t make a bad day into a good one in a blink of an eye. Try to focus on making a good day into a great one!
Don’t obsess over end goals
While you’re on your bicycle, try not to think a lot about the destination, if not at all. Forget about time (how much you need to get there) and the distance (how far is it). Take all the time you need and work at a pace that suits you best. If you overexert yourself, you won’t have the focus to meditate properly. Enjoy your ride – and don’t stress over unexpected things such as detours and changed routes. Those can make your cycling session more spontaneous.
Enjoy your senses
Feel the wind against your face, and listen to your surroundings. Enjoy the sounds, wherever you are – listen to the busy roads if you’re in town, or the chirping birds if you’re cycling through the country. If your muscles get sore, make a few adjustments. Relax your body and pay attention to your surroundings. Don’t forget to bring water to stay hydrated and a snack, if you’re on a longer trip. Stay hydrated, but also try to feel the freshness that water brings you, and while you eat, try to feel the flavors and textures of your food.
Tech is a no-no
People today have much troubles turning inward because of the overwhelming outside stimuli they receive, with technology being the number one cause of that. When planning a ride, try to make it completely tech free. If necessary, while on longer trips, you certainly don’t want to fall off the grid – so a phone in a backpack is acceptable. But, in other cases try to practice self-control. You don’t need music, or to check your phone every few minutes for messages and calls. This time is your time and you need to dedicate it solely to your needs – and frankly, you don’t need your phone.
Set a challenge
By being in motion, you can break the limits of your consciousness and connect to your surroundings like never before. That’s one of the reasons why meditating on your bicycle is a great idea. Try to fall into mindfulness when experiencing a challenging climb: Listen and focus on your breath and blend your bike into the terrain like it’s a part of earth. When you come to the descending part, you will feel overwhelmed, especially if you pick a valley or a mountain surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The key is that unlike in sitting meditation where the focus is on being still, you can experience your body very intensely while on the bike.
Even if you don’t own a bike currently, you can always find bicycles for sale online. Practice paying attention and you will feel mentally renewed after every bike ride. Follow these tips to improve your biking experience and enhance your senses and mindfulness. You will feel better, healthier and happier in no time.
