General Info About Orgain
Andrew, the founder of Orgain came up with the recipe for it not long after he was diagnosed with a form of tissue cancer and started losing weight drastically.
When he realized that he wasn’t getting any better from consuming the normally prescribed nutrition shakes (which mostly contained artificial ingredients), Andrew switched to a full-on organic approach.
He went on to create a successful line of organic products that’s committed to providing clean nutrition to the world.
Orgain Organic Protein Powder Overview
The Orgain Organic Protein Powder is a natural powdered drink that can be prepared by mixing with water or plant milk.
It’s suitable for consumption at any time of the day and can serve as a great addition to your post-workout diet regimen.
One interesting fact about this product is that every ingredient in this product is organic, plus it tastes considerably creamier than its many competitors.
Here are the most relevant attributes of this protein powder:
- Has an interesting taste; not-chalky but also not too sweetened.
- It is USDA certified organic (soy-free, gluten-free and non-GMO)
- Contains a fantastic amino acid profile
- No preservatives or artificial coloring
- It is quite convenient to consume.
- You can choose to go for either of its two (2) flavors; Vanilla Bean and Creamy Chocolate Fudge
- Its plant-based protein ingredients help to reduce inflammations and increase muscle functionality
- Lowers the risk of heart diseases and diabetes
- Its low-carb diet and high-fiber content assist in effective weight loss (and maintenance).
Orgain Organic Protein Powder Nutrients and Ingredients
One serving (two scoops) of the product contains about 21 grams of protein (common among similar products) and 3.5 grams of unsaturated fat. Each serving holds about 150 calories with about 1 gram of sugar and 5 grams each of sugar alcohol and fiber (which sums up to 150 calories).
Although a scoop of the product contains about 4% of a regular daily calcium intake and 15% iron, there are no listed vitamins on the nutrition label. But, you should note that it contains 8% of your daily sodium intake which is a little high.
It contains a special blend of pea, chia seed, brown rice and hemp protein. There are also measured amounts of rice dextrins, rice bran extract, rosemary extract, acacia gum and inulin, that combine to give it its Creamer Base.
The remaining ingredients are sweeteners mostly, thickeners and stabilizers like monkfruit extract, guar gum, acacia gum, eythritol (sugar alcohol) and natural flavors.
There’s no need to worry, we’ll be looking at the benefits of some of these ingredients in the next section.
Benefits & Effectiveness
One thing that every vegan out there can appreciate it for is that while providing complete proteins, the product is soy-free.
What’s not listed is the amino acid content in every serving of the product. As mentioned in the previous section, there’s nothing said about its vitamin content.
A lot of the ingredients in this product are effective. Let’s run through the most important ones.
It is the primary organic sweetener used in the Orgain Protein Powder contains zero calories. It does not affect blood sugar in any way.
The FDA instructs that total steviol glycosides (desired compounds in stevia extraction) used in finished foods must be at a minimum of 95%. Orgain hits a 98%+ mark.
As the name implies, it is not alcoholic. They do not contain ethanol at all. Erythritol, unlike maltitol and sorbitol (known to cause gastrointestinal issues) is a safe sweetener that is effective in tiny amounts.
Iron and Calcium
Orgain provides 15% of your daily iron intake and 4% of your daily calcium. These are two minerals that are not commonly found in organic diets.
Essential Amino Acids
The special blend of brown rice, chia, pea and rice provide a potent dose of all the essential amino acids.
Now, having mentioned all the benefits and effectiveness of this product, here's a review of Pea Protein Powders that you can check out and try, too.
How Does It Taste?
It can be quite difficult to make recommendations on taste, mainly because it depends of your personal preference. However, based of popular opinion, the ‘Vanilla Bean’ flavor is preferred to the ‘Creamy Chocolate Fudge’.
This conclusion was made after a careful observation of comments and reviews from people who have tried both flavors. If you’re looking to use the protein powder for non-dairy shakes, then you can decide to go for any flavor that suits you.
However, making smoothies with the product requires you to consider how well the flavor you pick will go with it.
Orgain Protein Powder has a relatively smooth taste which is a function of the powders well-balanced texture. Something I particularly appreciate about its taste is that it’s a balance between milkshake-level sweet and chalky sour.
There’s this common notion that the more authentic and rich a protein source is, the less likely for it to taste good. Well, I can’t say it’s true but there’s a certain truth to he statement.
Orgain Protein Powder uses a sweetener called Stevia (alongside monkfruit and eythritol) to lessen the aftertaste effect that most organic protein products seem to have.
Notwithstanding, the product maintains a creamy taste when mixed with water as well as plant milk. This makes it suitable for adding to kids’ meals. In addition, kids would most likely love to munch on a plant-based protein bar which we also have reviewed.
The mix-ability of this product is nothing short of outstanding. Unlike a lot of protein powders, it mixes well in water without forming too many large clumps of powder (regardless of the absence of lecithin in this product).
Orgain Protein Powder Side Effects
A major concern with Orgain Protein Powder is that it isn’t really a low carb protein powder. The reason being that it contains about 15 grams of carbs in every 21 grams of protein.
Not a lot of people are so certain about these numbers because of the unaccounted for carbohydrate contents from the sugar alcohol and fiber. The bone of contention is that these don’t absorb like normal carbs do, like sugars.
One issue that may be considered trivial by most is the absence of Vitamin C in this product to do with the plant-based iron content. Yes, it is true that Vitamin C aids the absorption of plant-based iron.
Something else about this product is that its sugar alcohol content could cause digestive concerns (like cramping and gas) for those with sensitive stomachs.
How Much Does It Cost?
You can get a jar of Orgain Organic Protein Powder for just about $20 which contains about 21 grams of protein in every serving. You’ll find just exactly 20 servings (40 scoops) in a single product (2.03 lbs).
When you do the math, that sums up to a little over $1 per serving which is a bargain for the quality of ingredients.
The main factors to consider when comparing prices of protein powders are: the product price, weight of the product, size of each serving, and amount of protein in every serving (grams).
After careful consideration of everyone of these factors, it’s safe to say that this product is a decent money-saver. This is in comparison to other natural protein powder products.
Orgain Protein Alternatives
It's a bit more expensive ($40) than Orgain but it's taste is just as smooth. An advantage it has over Orgain is that you get more protein per scoop (30g).
If you can’t afford Orgain, then this is a good alternative given that it’s much cheaper, at half the price. However, it contains lesser amount of protein (20g) per serving. Some additional features that make Purely Inspired gives an edge over Orgain is that it has more fibre content per serving (7g).
Orgain Organic Protein Pros and Cons
In my opinion, Orgain Organic Protein Powder is a product that is worthy of its claims.
When mixing, make sure to shake to quickly dissolve the few powder lumps that may come up. You can mix with water or it mixes well with almond milk too.
It’s a money saver that has 100% organic content with a complete amino acid profile.
As a bonafide chocolate lover, the Creamy Chocolate Fudge is my pick.
But I won’t judge you for opting for the Vanilla Bean instead ;)
